The Nobel Prize : Celebrating Excellence In Diverse Fields

The Nobel Prize is one of the world’s most prestigious and recognized awards, celebrating excellence in various fields, from science and literature to peace activism. Established by the will of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish inventor, engineer, and philanthropist, the Nobel Prize has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century.

History of the Nobel Prize

Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1833. He held 355 different patents throughout his lifetime, the most famous being dynamite. Despite his contributions to science and industry, Nobel is perhaps best known for his desire to leave a lasting legacy for the betterment of humanity.

The story of the Nobel Prize is closely tied to a premature obituary published in 1888, which mistakenly referred to Alfred Nobel as the “merchant of death” due to his invention of explosives. This erroneous report deeply affected Nobel, and he resolved to leave behind a more positive legacy. In his will, written in 1895, Nobel bequeathed his fortune to fund the Nobel Prizes, to be awarded annually in several categories, including Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, and Peace.
