SILKYARA BEND TUNNEL

SILKYARA BEND TUNNEL
The Silkyara Bend–Barkot tunnel is a significant infrastructure project located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. This tunnel, intended to connect National Highway 134, gained attention due to a major incident:
Tunnel Collapse Incident: On November 12, 2023, a section of this under-construction tunnel collapsed around 05:30 IST, resulting in the entrapment of 41 workers inside. This incident led to a major rescue operation.
History of Collapses: The collapse on November 12th was not an isolated event for the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel. It has experienced multiple collapses in the past, which highlights concerns regarding its safety and stability during construction.
Rescue Operations: The government undertook significant efforts to rescue the trapped workers. A particular focus was on a 2 km section of the tunnel where the concrete work had been completed, which was crucial for the safety of the workers during the rescue operations.
Project Continuation: Despite the collapse, the 4.5-kilometer-long Silkyara tunnel project is part of the central government’s strategic 900-km ‘Char Dham Yatra All Weather Road’. Plans are in place for the project to continue following a comprehensive safety audit and necessary repairs.
Rescue Challenges: The rescue of the workers trapped in the tunnel was complex, requiring an alternate plan of digging vertically towards the trapped individuals. The workers were trapped for over a week, underscoring the challenges faced in such rescue operations.
This incident at the Silkyara tunnel not only underscores the risks associated with large infrastructure projects, especially in challenging terrains, but also highlights the importance of stringent safety measures and quick emergency response capabilities in construction projects.
